Tour de France – Paris

Well, what an absolutely amazing Tour this has been this year. Congratulations to Cadel Evans, winning his first Tour after coming second on two previous occasions. A brilliant ride on the time trial saw him overcome the 57 second deficit to Andy Schlek to become the wearer of the yellow jersey before Paris.
Andy Schlek himself climbed superbly up the Galibier only a couple of days before, but it wasn’t enough of a time gap when Cadel is a great time trialist.
The real shame though, is that there was not a fourth step to the podium. Thomas Voeckler has always been an exciting cyclist, but having spent 10 days in the maillot jaune and battling incredibly bravely to try and keep it has made him a big folk hero to many fans.
In the green jersey battle, Mark Cavendish has finally triumphed. He won his fifth stage of this years tour and twentieth in total to ensure he keeps the green jersey. If there is any justice in the world he will be recognised in Britain as one of our best athletes.

Stage 11 – Blaye-les-Mines to Lavaur

An extremely rainy day at the end of the stage today in Lavaur brought back the breakaway into the peleton.
Team HTC led out Mark Cavendish to his third stage win of the 2011 tour and his eighteenth in total. Cavendish reversed the previous day’s result with Greipel and as Philippe Gilbert did not finish in the points at the end Mark Cavendish is now the leader of the Green Jersey.

Stage 10 – Aurillac to Carmaux

The shortest stage of this years Tour de France at 158km meant a win for Omega Pharma-Lotto in Aurillac, but not the green jersey wearer Philippe Gilbert. Gilbert, yellow jersey wearer Voeckler were in a group that broke away over the last climb with Gilbert trying very bravely to get away from the peleton, but ultimately they all merged together.

The peleton ended up in a bunch sprint with, Andre Greipel beat Mark Cavendish on a sprint to the line.

Stage 9 -Issoire to St-Flour

Well another incident packed day at the Tour de France. Yet more crashes. Earlier on the stage, David Miller and David Zabriskie crash, with Zabriskie abandoning the Tour, along with Alexander Vinokourov from the Astana team with a fractured femur.

Meanwhile the break away of the day, which includes Thomas Voeckler of Europcar, is involved in a terrible incident with a car, that swipes Sky’s Juan Antonio Flecha and Johnny Hoogerland of Vacansoleil that summersaults him into a fence!! Cycling being the sort of sport where people some how scrape themselves of the floor and get back on the bike, Flecha and Hoogerland have done that, after some minutes. The driver was a complete idiot and should be kicked out and made to have driving lessons.

Hoogerland crash

The breakaway is down to three now and stays like that until the end of the stage where Luis-Leon Sanchez breaks away to win the stage and Thomas Voeckler comes second and takes the yellow jersey from Thor Hushovd on the final stage before Monday’s rest day.

Stage 7 Tour de France

A terrible shame that Bradley Wiggins is out of the Tour de France. He looked to be in great form, especially after his win in the Criterium du Dauphine. I was looking forward to seeing him in the mountains.
On the positive side of the day, another great win for Mark Cavendish. Will he get the green jersey this year?

Stage 5 Tour de France

Great result for Mark Cavendish on stage 5. A lot of falls today though, with Tom Boonen, several minutes behind at the end.
